LAT_LON computes the "great circle" distances, in air-miles and
air-kilometers, between any two points whose Latitudes and
Longitudes are entered. This is "as the crow flies" distance,
and will be greatly different from the distance traveled
following roads.
All data is saved to disk. You can delete the whole mess at any
time by deleting the three DIST.xxx files. LAT_LON.EXE will just
start a new set the next time you run it.
LAT_LON uses negative values for West Longitude and for South
Latitude. Also, entries must be made with leading zeros. E.g.,
24°W must be entered as "-024", and 1' must be entered as "01".
The way you ENTER A NEGATIVE VALUE is to type the number, THEN
press the "-" key over on the right beside the number pad. This
will input the "-" and advance the cursor to the next entry. For
the positive values, either the "+" over by the number keys, or
the Enter key, will work fine.
LAT_LON is kind of dumb! It can't accept negative zero, so you
can't input a Latitude or Longitude of, for instance, "-0 deg. 34
min." If you must work this close to the Equator and/or
Greenwich meridian, try using a 1 deg. offset.
LAT_LON has a built-in screen saver, so don't panic when your
screen goes black! Just press any key (I use the arrow keys) to
bring it back.
LAT_LON.EXE is released into the Public Domain by Richard K.
Thompson. No fee or remuneration is expected, but all messages
are appreciated. If interest is shown, LAT_LON may be expanded,
and/or other related programs may be developed.
